The United Haitian American Society’s Foundation Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership qualities and a commitment to making a positive impact in our community.

Each year, UHAS awards up to 4 from a minimum of $500 To $1,000 scholarships to the children of Haitian American residents of Connecticut to be used for educational expenses at any accredited college, university or vocational/technical institutions for the upcoming school year. Since 2019, UHAS has awarded more than $12,000 in scholarships.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2026-2027 academic year. Applications will be accepted now through June 15th, 2026. In total, four scholarships will be awarded. The program provides the scholarships to graduating seniors from local high schools in Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Shelton, Trumbull and surrounding towns /cities in the state of Connecticut.

The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant based on academic achievement and their response to one of the three essays. Academic requirements include a minimum GPA of 2.5 and graduation from high school or equivalent. GED applicants are encouraged, and successful candidates already enrolled or on schedule to enroll in two-year or four-year academic programs at approved colleges and vocational school.

These scholarships will be awarded to Haitian American students living in Connecticut. Students pursuing this scholarship are either Haitian born or residents of the United States with Haitian parent(s).

Essay Guidelines

  • Essays must be between 500 and 750 words.
  • Submissions should be typed and double-spaced using a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman, 12 pt).
  • Essays must reflect the applicant’s original thoughts, analysis, and voice.
  • Proper grammar, organization, and clarity will be considered in the evaluation process.

Essay Topics

1. How is Artificial Intelligence (AI) Changing Everyday Life?
Artificial Intelligence now influences how we communicate, shop, drive, and make decisions. In your essay, discuss how AI has become a part of daily life. Consider both the benefits and potential drawbacks. Do you believe society has become more efficient, more dependent, or both? Support your position with examples.

2. Is Haiti’s Crisis Primarily an Internal Failure or the Result of External Interference?
Examine the balance between domestic governance challenges and the role of foreign involvement in Haiti’s ongoing crisis. In your response, analyze both perspectives and present a well-supported argument.

3. Does Social Media Help or Harm Haiti’s International Image?
Analyze how social media platforms portray Haiti, including its political instability, security challenges, and cultural strengths. Discuss whether social media contributes more positively or negatively to Haiti’s global perception.

4. How Has the Assassination of President Jovenel Moïse Shaped Haiti’s Current Crisis?
Discuss the impact of President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination on Haiti’s political, social, and security landscape. How has this event influenced the country’s current situation?

3. Does Social Media Help or Harm Haiti’s International Image?
Analyze how social media platforms portray Haiti, including its political instability, security challenges, and cultural strengths. Discuss whether social media contributes more positively or negatively to Haiti’s global perception.
